The case study

2026 Christchurch Marathon

12 April 2026
Full production management By B Creative

The brief.

In 2025 the Christchurch Marathon used a team of freelancers. Mixed styles, no cohesion, scattered folder of files. For 2026 they wanted one creative vision, to elevate the event to a world class level.

We put real runners and core landmarks of the city in the lead role. We followed four real athletes through the weeks before race day, to tell the real stories behind the faces lining up on the start line. We wanted to engage the different demographics in the running community.

How we served it up.

UGC Creator content speaks to a wide, but shallow audience. It does not reach the people who identify as runners. The narrow but deep audience. The people who train at 5am, come back every year, bring friends and book flights. We cast four of them and followed them on raceday, then released every film as a collab post so it went out through their communities as well as the event's.

The thesis was simple. Humanise the event. A marathon photographed from the outside is a road closed and a clock running. Told through the people in it, it becomes something a stranger can picture themselves doing — and that is what makes somebody enter next year. Every film was released as a collaboration with the athlete in it, so it landed in their feed, their club and their followers as well as the event's. The community isn't the subject. It's the distribution.

The content system

Your event is world class. Your current content system isn't.

Most events buy a hero film and a cutdown. Planned properly, the same budget and shoot days produce an entire rollout — because every shoot is designed to feed more than one deliverable.

Christchurch Marathon · The wider return

The return didn't stop at the finish line.

Views are the easiest thing to count and the least interesting thing we made. The numbers that matter to a race director sit further downstream — who travelled, what they spent in the city, what the sponsors walked away with, and what still exists to work with a year later.

A local running the 5K doesn't book a hotel. The person who flies in for the marathon does — and they are exactly the person this kind of content is built for.

What the sponsors got

Months of presence, not a logo on an arch

Christchurch's partners appeared across four documentaries, twelve cutdowns, six teasers and 170+ photographs, released over months — and got the files to run on their own channels. Naming rights on a race-day banner reach the people already standing there. This got 13m+ impressions.

What's still working

Making next year bigger

The 2026 library is what Christchurch is marketing the 2027 event with. Their 50th runs on 18 April 2027, targeting 10,000 entries, and the groundwork for that campaign was laid the year before — footage nobody can go back and shoot.

When you take this to a partner or a funding body, we'll put the numbers, deliverables and reach into a form you can hand over — and sit in the room if it helps. Your event, your relationships. We're just useful in the meeting.

Before you ask

The questions every event director asks us

We already have a photographer and a videographer.+

So did Christchurch Marathon. In 2025 it was a team of freelancers with mixed styles and no cohesion. Single-sourcing 2026 is why it looked like a campaign instead of a folder of files — one creative direction, one grade, one narrative running through everything.

Can you handle an event our size?+

Any size. The team scales up and down; the only real requirement is mobility on the day. At Christchurch that meant five shooters, drone coverage, AirTag athlete tracking, an on-site edit station and six simultaneous race finishes covered at the line.

We need our winners' photos immediately for media.+

Non-negotiable for us too — they went to press within the hour. And it pays for itself: our same-day photo drops earned 7.4× the engagement of the later ones.

Our audience is small. Is this worth it?+

Christchurch Marathon has just over 5,000 Instagram followers. The posts carrying our content drew 12,946 likes and reactions and 675 comments — more than two and a half times the account's entire following in likes alone. Reach isn't capped by your following.

Could we just use creator content or an influencer?+

For the 5K and 10K field, often yes. For the people who identify as runners — the ones who return every year, bring friends and travel to race — no. Different formats, different segments. We would rather help you work out which is which than sell you the wrong one.

You're in Christchurch. We're not.+

We work across New Zealand and internationally. Travel outside Christchurch is charged at cost.

What does something like this cost?+

A full programme of this scope sits in the $20,000–30,000 range depending on shoot days, crew size and how much of the rollout you want. We will scale the scope to the budget you have — and we will be straight with you about what a given number can and cannot deliver.

Tell me about your next event.

We'll come back with a creative idea, shoot plan, a deliverables list and a number. Not a deck.
