Overview
LB Civil was subcontracted to Fulton Hogan on a sewer renewal off Waltham Road and Rogers Street in Christchurch. The work meant replacing old earthenware pipe, installing new manholes and running a bypass system to keep wastewater moving while the street's existing system was taken out of service.
LB Civil sell to main contractors and councils rather than to homeowners. Those buyers choose on technical capability, not on price. The brief was to prove that capability on a job that demonstrated it, and to put the people doing the work on camera while we were there.
The difficulty is that almost nothing on this site explains itself. Pipe bursting is one of the services LB Civil sells and it happens underground. The bypass was the part of the job that mattered most to a main contractor and the part least visible from the footpath. We drew the pipe runs and the bypass route over the footage in motion graphics, so a viewer can follow where the wastewater is going.
LB Civil's crews had not been on camera before. Asking them to talk down the barrel was never going to produce anything usable. We filmed them walking the site and explaining the work as they went, and ran short interviews as a backup. Most of what ended up in the final edit came from those candid moments rather than the sit-down pieces.
Filming on a Fulton Hogan site also meant our own health and safety had to meet theirs before a camera went anywhere near the trench.
